Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city bids farewell to the city’s prominent photographer as Paramount Studio owner Velayudhan passes away at the age of 94. He breathed his last on Saturday at his residence in Kunnumpuram Lane, near Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. The cremation is scheduled to take place today in Santhi Kavadam.
Also known as the “photographer of the capital city,” Velayudhan’s contribution to the field of photography has left an indelible mark. Velayudhan took the reins of Paramount Studios in 1960 and earned the distinction of establishing Thiruvananthapuram’s first colour Lab. Despite having only a 4th-grade education, he rose to prominence through hard work and dedication.
In 1947, at the age of 17, Velayudhan ventured to Madras from Thrippunithura to study photography. After learning the essentials from a relative’s studio, he returned home and joined the Paramount Studio owned by Pathuswamy ,a native of Tamil Nadu.
Subsequently, he established his own studio called Vel near Palayam market in the capital city. In the 1960s, upon returning home after entrusting the management of Pathuswamy’s Studio, Velayudhan’s name was added to Paramount. In 1984, Velayudhan handed over the studio’s charge to his second son, Suresh.
