Thiruvananthapuram: The highly anticipated schedule for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been officially announced, marking a historic collaboration among three North American nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This tri-hosted event is set to be the world’s largest sports spectacle, featuring a total of 104 matches.

Commencing on June 11, 2026, the tournament will kick off at the iconic Estadio Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The grand finale is scheduled to take place on July 19 at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, situated in New York.

The tournament’s reach will extend across 16 cities, spanning the three host countries. According to information available on FIFA’s official website, a notable expansion in team participation is anticipated, with a total of 48 teams set to compete. This represents a significant increase from the 32 teams that participated in the previous World Cup held in Qatar.

Canada and the USA will embark on their World Cup journey with opening matches in their respective cities. Canada’s inaugural match is scheduled for July 12 in Toronto, while the USA will commence their campaign in Los Angeles.

The Estadio Azteca Stadium, boasting over 83,000 seats, will be a focal point of the tournament, hosting the opening match and contributing to Mexico’s distinction as a three-time World Cup host after previous editions in 1970 and 1986. Canada will be making its debut as a World Cup venue, while the USA, having previously hosted in 1994, is set to organise the event for the second time.
