Denied old age pension: 90-year-old woman protests in the middle of the road in Idukki

Idukki: Pension and other benefits are essential for those whose health prevents them from working. However, due to the government’s inefficiency, Malayalees are being denied their rightful pensions. The current scenario reflects a trend where the Finance Minister and others consistently deflect blame onto the Center.

The social media is filled with heartbreaking pictures of a 90-year-old woman sitting on a chair in the middle of the road, protesting after not receiving her old age pension. Ponnamma, an elderly resident of Karuppupalam, Vandiperiyar, Idukki district, employed the unique method of protest.

The protest lasted for about two hours. The mother, who relied on her son, a laborer, had no choice but to do this. Upon receiving the information, the Vandiperiyar police arrived at the scene. They reassured Ponnamma, promising to engage with the authorities to find a solution.

No significant announcements regarding pensions have been made in this year’s budget either. Although the Finance Minister has pledged precise pension payments, there has been no increase in the welfare pension amount. People say that it remains to be seen how much this will be implemented.
