Thiruvananthapuram: MP Shashi Tharoor has extended his congratulations to those involved in the successful diplomatic mission leading to the release of eight ex-Indian Navy men who were earlier sentenced to death in Qatar. He took to social media platform X to convey his appreciation.
“It’s a huge relief —and a matter of quiet celebration for all Indians — that eight of our compatriots who were sentenced to death in Qatar have been freed & returned home. Congratulations to all those who worked quietly behind the scenes for their release,” Tharoor wrote on X.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the release of the eight ex-Navy men detained in Qatar through a press release this morning. Seven out of the eight individuals have safely returned to Bharat. The decision to release them was made by the Amir of the State of Qatar, underscoring the effectiveness of Bharat’s diplomatic intervention.
The Indian nationals, employed by the Doha-based Dahra Global, were apprehended in August 2022. The specific charges against them were not disclosed by Qatari authorities. According to reports they were charged with spying for Israel. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai on December 1, the Indian ambassador in Doha was granted consular access to them, leading to the subsequent commutation of their sentences.
