Allahabad High Court refuses ban on Puja at Vyas Tehkhana inside Gyanvapi Complex

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has declined to impose a ban on the ongoing puja at Vyas Tehkhana within the Gyanvapi complex, following the completion of hearings regarding appeals challenging the validity of the District Judge’s permission for the prayers. The decision was rendered by a bench led by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu faction, expressed contentment with the court’s decision, emphasising that it ensures the continuation of the puja at Vyas Tehkhana. He remarked, “Today, the Allahabad High Court has dismissed the first appeal from orders of Anjuman Intezamia, which was directed against the orders of January 17th and 31st, and the effect of the order is that the ongoing puja in the ‘Vyas Tehkhana’ of the Gyanvapi complex will continue.”

The situation began when the Varanasi court, on January 31, permitted Hindu devotees to conduct prayers in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque, known as the ‘Vyas Tehkhana’. Additionally, the court directed the district magistrate to facilitate the puja with a nominated pujari from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust. Responding to this decision, the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee, responsible for managing the Gyanvapi Mosque, filed a plea before the Allahabad High Court on February 1, contesting the Varanasi court’s ruling. This plea came shortly after the Supreme Court’s refusal to expedite the mosque committee’s case.
