The 76th edition of the prestigious global film event, Cannes Film Festival is happening from 16 – 27 May 2023 and the majestic setting it presents is always one to remember. Filmmakers from all around the world will come together for this event, some premiering their film and some even announcing their next. India has always maintained its presence in the festival, and this year too that is evident with delegates representing India and some films screening there under various categories.

Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting L Murugan will be leading the delegation at the festival, with Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur set to deliver a video message as part of addressing the Inaugural Session. As per reports, L Murugan will be sporting a traditional Tamil Veshti and shirt on the red carpet, with shirt having the Tricolour logo on the left side and G20 logo on the right. The minister is set to be accompanied with Guneet Monga (Producer of The Elephant Whisperers).

The 1990 Meitei language film Ishanou was restored for screening at the festival. The film which is a story filled with love and grief mixed with the Manipur culture was first aired on Dooradarshan and was also screened at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. The film was written by M K Binodini Devi and directed by Aribam Syam Sharma.

Anurag Kashyap’s film Kennedy is premiering at the Midnight Screenings section of the festival. Kennedy is set to feature the story of an insomniac ex-cop who is presumed to be dead, operates secretly for the corrupt system and is looking for redemption. The film consists of a cast of Rahul Bhat, Sunny Leone and Benedict Garrett in lead roles.

Other than these films, Kanu Behl’s Agra is also premiering in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival. The film is expected to revolve around the story of an exploration of sexual dynamics in a family based at a small town in North India. The film is set to be a comeback for the 1990 film Aashiqui star Rahul Roy.

The other representatives to be part of the festival are actress Anushka Sharma who will be sharing the stage with Hollywood actress Kate Winslet as part of an event for honouring the women of cinema, actress and model Manushi Chillar (Miss World 2017 winner) along with social media influencer Dolly Singh, and actress Esha Gupta and Sara Ali Khan will also be part of it. Manipur veteran actor Kangabam Tomba will also be a part of it, as his film ‘Ishanou’ is screening at the Classics section of the festival.

Although other regular actress like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor haven’t confirmed their attendance for the event, it is expected that they will also be a part of it as both are the brand ambassadors of L’Oreal Paris who is the main sponsor of the event.

As per reports, actor Vijay Verma is also set to return to Cannes after a decade, along with actress Aditi Rao Hydari.

The festival is also under the threat of disruption because of the union workers protest against Emmanuel Macron for his pension reforms. The festival is also under pressure as the WGA in America protest is still raging on.
