Kozhikode : Acclaimed transgender actress Riya Isha has raised a poignant issue of representation and inclusivity in the recently declared Kerala state film awards for the year 2022. Riya Isha has expressed disappointment and concern, alleging that the award jury ignored transgender artists in the transgender/women category. Despite several talented contenders from the transgender community competing in the category, the award was handed over to female director Shruthi Sharanyam for her movie “B 32 Muthal 44 Vare.”
Riya Isha has taken a courageous stand by voicing her concerns and advocating for the recognition of the transgender community’s artistic contributions in the film industry. The actress stated that it was unjust and disheartening for the jury members to overlook transgender artists who were competing solely in the transgender/women category.
In the movie “Other,” Riya Isha portrayed the central character, earning critical acclaim for her outstanding performance. Alongside her, numerous other artists from the transgender community had also submitted their nominations for the award in question. However, despite their notable achievements and commendable work, none of them were considered for the prestigious recognition.
In her efforts to address the issue, Riya Isha has submitted a formal complaint to Minister Saji Cheriyan, urging him to reconsider the decision to award Shruthi Sharanyam and reevaluate the nominations from the transgender community. Her hope is that the government will take a proactive stance to rectify the oversight and ensure that future state film awards genuinely reflect the diverse talent pool in the industry.
