Chennai: The world of Tamil cinema is mourning the loss of veteran actor and director Marimuthu, who passed away at the age of 58 due to a sudden cardiac arrest. The revered artist breathed his last on a Friday morning at 8:30 a.m., leaving behind a rich legacy of cinematic contributions that spanned over three decades.

Tragedy struck as Marimuthu collapsed while dubbing for a television serial. Despite immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital, his life could not be saved, leaving the entertainment industry and his fans in shock and grief.

Marimuthu’s body is currently resting at the hospital, and it will soon be taken to his residence in Chennai, where friends, family, and well-wishers will pay their final respects to the departed soul.

His most recent film, ‘Jailer,’ where he portrayed a menacing villain, was his last cinematic endeavor. Throughout his career, Marimuthu showcased his versatility as an artist, taking on a wide range of roles and earning acclaim for his performances.

Born in the village of Pasumalaitheri in Theni, Marimuthu’s journey in the film industry was nothing short of remarkable. In 1990, he ventured to Chennai with dreams of becoming a film director. He began his journey as a waiter in hotels but soon crossed paths with renowned lyricist Vairamuthu thanks to their shared interest in literature. Marimuthu’s dedication and determination led him to work as an assistant director with prominent filmmakers such as Rajkiran, Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Seeman, and S. J. Surya. Notably, he served as a co-director on Silambarasan’s team for ‘Manmadhan’ in 2004.

Marimuthu made his directorial debut with ‘Kannum Kannum’ in 2008, a romantic film that, while not achieving significant box office success, earned critical acclaim for its honest and endearing storytelling. He continued to make his mark in the industry with films like ‘Pulivaal’ in 2014, demonstrating his storytelling prowess.

In the 2010s, Marimuthu shifted his focus to his acting career, where he excelled in supporting roles in various Tamil films. His standout performances in movies like ‘Yuddham Sei’ (2011), ‘Aarohanam’ (2012), ‘Nimirndhu Nil’ (2014), ‘Komban’ (2015), and ‘Marudhu’ (2016) solidified his reputation as a versatile and talented actor. His compelling portrayal in ‘Marudhu’ even caught the attention of actor Vishal, who signed him for ‘Kaththi Sandai’ in 2016.

In 2022, Marimuthu made his debut in television serials, where he gained immense popularity for his portrayal of the main antagonist in ‘Ethirneechal.’
