Bengaluru: Renowned Kannada actress Leelavathi, who graced the silver screen in over 600 films, passed away at the age of 85. The veteran actress passed away at a private hospital in Nelamangala last evening. Hailing from Belthangadi in Dakshina Kannada district, Leelavathy’s illustrious career extended beyond Kannada cinema, as she also showcased her talent in Tamil and Telugu films.
Leelavathi embarked on her cinematic journey at the young age of 16, leaving an indelible mark with her performances alongside legendary actors such as Dr. Rajkumar, Shivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao, M.G. Ramachandran, and many others. She gained recognition for her outstanding roles in memorable films such as “Bhakta Kumbara,” “Mana Mecchida Madadi,” and “Santha Thukaram.”
She received a State Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1989 for her performance in the film ‘Doctor Krishna.’ She ventured into film production and produced movies such as ‘College Hero’ (1990), ‘Kannadada’ (2006), ‘Shukra’ (2007), and ‘Taaradu’ (2009).
Residing in Nelamangala with her son Vinod Raj, Leelavathi’s contribution to the film industry earned her admiration and respect.
