Panaji, Goa: The eagerly awaited National Games 2023 is set to take place in the picturesque state of Goa from October 25 to November 9, as announced by the technical committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Tuesday. However, the dates are subject to confirmation once the final daily schedule for the 37th edition is determined by the IOA.

The National Games are India’s prestigious multi-sport event, akin to the Olympics, where athletes from different states and Union Territories showcase their talents and compete for medals. Renowned Indian athletes such as Neeraj Chopra, Sania Mirza, Mirabai Chanu, Sajan Prakash, and Manu Bhaker, among others, have previously participated in this grand sporting spectacle.

This edition of the National Games holds special significance as it marks the first time that Goa will serve as the host. Initially awarded the hosting rights for the 36th edition in 2016, Goa faced several postponements before the event was ultimately held in Gujarat last year. Now, Goa has the opportunity to welcome athletes from across the country for a memorable sporting extravaganza.

The National Games have a rich history, with their origins dating back to 1924 when they were first held in Lahore, undivided India. Initially known as the Indian Olympic Games, the event adopted its current name in 1938.

The upcoming National Games promise to be the largest yet, featuring a record number of 43 sports, including both Olympic and indigenous disciplines. Last year’s edition saw more than 7,000 athletes participating in 36 sports, with Kho Kho, yogasana, and mallakhamb making their debut.

In the previous edition, the Services Sports Control Board, representing the Indian Armed Forces, emerged as the champions with an impressive haul of 128 medals, including 61 golds. Maharashtra closely followed with 140 medals, including 39 golds, while Haryana secured 38 gold medals out of their total tally of 116.

Sports enthusiasts and fans across the nation eagerly anticipate the National Games 2023 in Goa, as it promises to be a remarkable showcase of talent, dedication, and the spirit of sportsmanship.
