Patiala: Olympic boxer Vikas Krishnan received timely assessment and surgery for an injury he sustained during a boxing assessment camp, thanks to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) Central Athlete Injury Management System (CAIMS).

Vikas, who is currently participating in the Boxing National Camp at the SAI NSNIS Patiala Centre, injured his left distal biceps tendon during a sparring session on June 23. Following the injury, the team doctor recommended an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.

The MRI results confirmed that Vikas had suffered a distal biceps tear on his left bicep. His case was then forwarded to CAIMS for further guidance. After careful consideration, CAIMS advised immediate surgery for a quick and early recovery.

On June 29, Vikas underwent the surgery successfully, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Saturday. The entire cost of his treatment and recovery has been covered by SAI and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) under the National Campers Insurance scheme, ensuring that the boxer receives the necessary care without any financial burden.

Vikas’s father, Krishan Kumar, expressed his gratitude towards SAI and BFI, highlighting their unwavering support during this challenging time. He commended SAI and BFI for their proactive efforts in reaching out to the insurance company and diligently following up on the case. The assistance provided by SAI and BFI has made the entire ordeal much easier for Vikas and his family to manage.

The prompt response and efficient coordination between SAI, BFI, and the medical professionals involved have demonstrated the commitment of these organisations towards the welfare of athletes. By swiftly arranging the necessary assessments, consultations, and surgery, they have prioritised Vikas’s well-being and ensured that he receives the best possible care.
