Karnataka: Bengaluru FC, one of the prominent football clubs in Indian Super League, received a significant boost as their skipper and Indian football icon, Sunil Chhetri, signed a new one-year deal with the club. The agreement also includes an option for an additional year, highlighting Chhetri’s commitment to the team. The official announcement was made by the club on Monday, bringing joy to the hearts of Bengaluru FC fans.

Following India’s triumphant victory over Lebanon in the SAFF Championship semifinal on Saturday, Chhetri revealed his decision to continue his journey with the club by unveiling a banner at the Kanteerava Stadium. The banner proudly stated his intention to stay with the club that has brought him immense success, having won seven trophies during his time with Bengaluru FC.

Expressing his happiness, Chhetri stated, “I have signed a Bengaluru FC contract a fair few times, and what I can tell you is that it always feels special, even when it probably should not, given it is a formality. I am so happy that I will be spending two more years here. The fans have been such a vital factor in this decision. Over the years, there have been some generous offers from some very good clubs, but the fact that I couldn’t even think of going anywhere made me realise the influence our fans have had on that decision.”

Chhetri, who has been an integral part of Bengaluru FC since its inception in 2013, holds the distinguished title of being the longest-serving player in the team. With a decade of unwavering dedication, Chhetri has played in 10 seasons for the Blues. During this remarkable period, he has secured numerous accolades for the club, including the I-League titles in 2014 and 2016, the Federation Cup in 2015 and 2017, the Super Cup in 2018, the Indian Super League in 2019, and most recently, the Durand Cup in 2020.

Considered as one of the most enduring and influential figures in Indian football, Chhetri’s association with Bengaluru FC holds immense significance. He has made over 250 appearances for the club across various competitions, showcasing his exceptional talent and leadership skills. With an impressive goal-scoring record, Chhetri has found the back of the net 116 times, making him an indispensable asset for the team.
