Bribery scandal unearthed at Palakkad check post: Government revenue and ethics under scrutiny

Palakkad:  A startling case of corruption has been exposed at the Govindapuram check post of the motor vehicle department, Palakkad, as officials seized a hefty sum of Rs 16,450 within mere hours. This revelation comes amidst concerns about bribe money flowing freely in the state, raising questions about the integrity of public officials and the government’s revenue collection system.

The suspicion of illegal activities taking place at the checkpoint prompted a vigilance inspection, driven by intelligence that vehicles, including cargo transporters, were slipping across the border unchecked. Disguised vigilance officials conducted a meticulous operation and discovered incriminating evidence of bribe money being exchanged and concealed.

In a dramatic twist, a tea shopkeeper from nearby was caught red-handed attempting to hand over a bundle of notes to one of the employees, cleverly disguising his intentions as a tea offering. The subsequent inspection yielded a shocking discovery – a total of Rs 16,450 wrapped in paper, strategically hidden across various locations within the counter.

Official records indicate that the Govindapuram check post ordinarily generates daily revenue of Rs 12,900 for the government, encompassing taxes, fines, and related charges. This stark difference between the official revenue and the illicit funds seized highlights the pervasive nature of the bribery issue.
