Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant development, the age limit for student concessions on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses has been extended to 27. The previous age limit, which had been fixed at 25 years, has now been revised following widespread criticism and appeals from student organisations. The age limit was introduced in response to the observation that individuals who did not meet the eligibility criteria were availing themselves of free travel benefits.
Student organisations actively advocated for the reconsideration of the age limit, highlighting its adverse effects on students across the state. They submitted a formal petition to the Transport Minister, urging the authorities to revisit this policy and address the concerns of the student community.
Last year, the reduction of the age limit for student concessions to 25 years was implemented as a cost-cutting measure, driven by the severe financial challenges faced by KSRTC. CMD Biju Prabhakar justified the decision, citing the need to reduce expenses, especially considering the significant number of research students who depend on these concessions for their academic pursuits.
