Wayanad: The Agriculture Department has devised a comprehensive action plan to prevent crop damage caused by wildlife disturbance. A comprehensive action plan, led by the Department of Agriculture, has been initiated to address the persistent issue of wild animals encroaching on farmlands in various areas of Wayanad. This project will be carried out in collaboration with the Forest Department.

The scheme is set to be implemented with a budget of Rs 3.88 crore for the financial year 2023-24 under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) scheme, with 60 percent funded by the central government and 40 percent by the state. As part of this project, 130 kilometers of solar electric fencing and hanging power systems will be installed. This marks the first time that the Department of Agriculture in Wayanad district is undertaking a project aimed at mitigating human-wildlife disturbance.

In the initial phase, measures to control issues related to wild animal nuisances will be implemented in selected panchayats within the district’s three constituencies. The objective is to complete the project by March 31. Officials emphasize that the district’s goal is to find a solution to the problem of farmers abandoning agriculture due to wildlife intrusions and resulting damage.
