Kottayam: A householder staged a protest in front of the Supplyco office, alleging that the rice received from the ration shop was infested with worms. VS Santhosh, a resident of Udayanapuram, Vaikam protested at the supply office with rice containing worms. There are also allegations that the food department has not taken action despite numerous complaints about the rice distributed in the ration shops across the taluk.
The protester, Santhosh, arrived with 20 kg of parboiled rice purchased from ration shop number 8 at Nerekadavu, Udayanapuram. He claimed that the raw rice bought from the shop was also infested with worms. Presently, all the 43 ration shops in Vaikom taluk are distributing the same spoiled rice. The food department stated that worms and other issues were discovered in rice supplied by two private mills.
The taluk supply officer mentioned that several ration dealers inadvertently provided poor-quality rice and that measures have been initiated to replace the rice distributed to the ration shops. However, for the past two months, the ration shops in the taluk have consistently supplied substandard rice. Despite widespread protests regarding this issue, there has been no intervention from the Civil Supplies Minister.
