CPI(M)’s AI anchor ‘Samata’ for Lok Sabha election campaign sparks criticism in West Bengal

Kolkata: The CPI(M) party’s latest move to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) anchor for election campaigning in West Bengal has ignited widespread criticism. In West Bengal, the CPI(M) has unveiled an AI anchor named ‘Samata’ for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The CPI(M) introduced the AI anchor through a video on the social media platform X, anchoring in Bengali language.

However, several comments have appeared, suggesting that the CPI(M) party’s dependence on ‘AI-Samata’, as no one was willing to be an anchor for the party in this Lok Sabha election.

Meanwhile, Srijan Bhattacharya, a Left candidate from Jadavpur, stated, “We are going to use this AI anchor for election campaigns as we are always open to embracing new approaches that are not harmful.”

At the same time, BJP’s Tathagata Roy criticized the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for elections, highlighting the irony of the CPI(M) embracing technology after initially opposing computer education in the 1980s.

Several comments on social media assert that AI has been brought in as the anchor due to a lack of willing individuals within the party.

Several criticisms have arisen in social media, contending that it is contradictory for the CPI(M) party, which once opposed computerization and digital literacy, to now employ Artificial Intelligence (AI) for election campaigns.
