Lucknow: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on Thursday night. According to reports, Ansari was taken to Uttar Pradesh’s Rani Durgawati Medical College after feeling unwell but suffered a heart attack.

Following the confirmation of Ansari’s death, a massive police presence has been established outside the hospital. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) have been imposed in some places due to warnings that individuals from his gang may attempt to create tension in the state.

Ansari, a five-term MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau, is accused in 61 criminal cases, including 15 murders. He is also the accused in the murder case involving a Congress leader. Several cases have been registered against him in Mau, Ghazipur, Varanasi, and Jaunpur districts. Ansari, who joined a gangster group in 1980, formed his own gangster group in 1990.

Ansari is accused in cases of  kidnapping and extortion. In 2004, firearms were seized from his center. He has been in jail since 2005 in connection with this case. In April 2023, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. On March 13, 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison in a case related to the use of forged documents to obtain an arms license in 1990.
