PM Modi expresses gratitude to USA for return of trafficked artefacts

New Delhi: In a show of appreciation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt thanks to the United States on Wednesday, July 19, for the repatriation of 105 invaluable Indian artefacts, which hold immense cultural and religious significance. The return of these artefacts, a testament to the preservation of India’s heritage and rich history, has brought joy to the hearts of every Indian.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, stating,”This will make every Indian happy. Grateful to the USA for this. These precious artefacts hold immense cultural and religious significance. Their homecoming is a testament to our commitment to preserving our heritage and rich history.”

The United States handed over these 105 trafficked antiquities to India on Monday, July 17, at the India Consulate in New York. The collection includes a wide range of valuable artefacts showcasing the diversity of Indian civilization, with origins dating back as far as the 2nd century AD. Among the notable items are the 12th–13th century Marble Arch from Rajasthan, the 14th–15th century Apsara from Central India, and the 14th–15th century Sambandar from South India.

Comprising materials such as stone, wood, metal, and terracotta, the collection encompasses approximately 50 religious artefacts representing Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam. These treasured antiques will soon be returned to India.

The repatriation of these artefacts follows PM Modi’s historic visit to the US in June, during which he received a warm welcome from President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the White House and addressed a session of the US Congress.

Notably, the Modi administration has been steadfast in its pursuit to retrieve stolen Indian artefacts. Previous visits, including PM Modi’s trip to the US in 2016, resulted in the return of 16 antiques. Similarly, during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to the US in September 2021, the US government sent 157 items back to India, further underscoring the shared commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage.
