Champhai (Mizoram): On Wednesday, a joint operation involving Assam Rifles and the Excise Department of Champhai in Mizoram led to the seizure of a significant quantity of contraband drugs valued at ₹54.79 crore in two separate operations.
The statement released by the authorities indicated that the Serchhip battalion of Assam Rifles, along with officials from the state excise and narcotics department, made the discoveries. They recovered 94,940 tablets worth ₹28.482 crore from Mualkawi village in Champhai district and 87,720 tablets worth ₹26.316 crore from Khuangleng village in the same district on July 26 during two separate operations.
The total haul of Meth tablets amounted to ₹54,79,80,000, and it has been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further legal proceedings, as mentioned in the official statement. The rampant smuggling of illegal drugs remains a significant concern for the state of Mizoram.
Two individuals were arrested in connection with the possession and transportation of the contraband. Rostum Ali Lasker (32) from Hailakandi in Assam and Jantu Das (45) from Ramutia in Tripura are now in custody, and both the seized drugs and the accused have been handed over to the excise and narcotics department in Champhai for further investigation.
The statement further revealed that Assam Rifles personnel have seized narcotics worth ₹666 crore throughout this year. The drugs, known as ‘crystal meth’ or ‘speed pills,’ are reportedly smuggled from Myanmar. Mizoram shares a porous 404-km-long international border with Myanmar, which has been a part of the infamous Golden Triangle known for drug trafficking activities.
