Bhuvaneshwar: The death toll due to lightning in Odisha has now reached 12, with approximately 15 individuals hospitalized due to severe burns. In just three hours, a staggering total of 62,350 lightning strike happened across the state. The Special Relief Commission (SRC) has additionally announced that each family of the deceased will receive financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh.
Furthermore, the Odisha government has officially declared lightning strikes as a state calamity. Meteorological experts have explained that these unusual and intense thunderstorms are primarily attributed to the combination of extreme heat and high humidity in the atmosphere. Such weather phenomena tend to occur when the monsoon returns to its normal pattern after a prolonged hiatus.
Regarding the victims, four were from Khurda district, two from Balangir, and one each from Angul, Baudh, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri. In addition to human casualties, the Special Relief Commission (SRC) has reported that eight cattle were killed by lightning strikes in Gajapati and Kandamal districts.
As a precautionary measure, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist in the state on Wednesday.
