It has been a year since the tragic martyrdom of Massa Amini, a young woman who was detained and subsequently killed by religious police in Iran due to her refusal to wear a hijab. Stringent restrictions were put in place in connection with Martyrdom Day, including in the capital city of Tehran. Amini’s father, Amjad Amini, was apprehended by security forces in response to the protest situation.
Following Amini’s tragic death, widespread protests erupted in Iran, with demonstrators demanding an end to the Iranian regime’s misogynistic policies. The initial women-led protest eventually escalated into a riot, with women taking to the streets to express their dissent by removing their hijabs, symbolising their resistance against enforced dress codes and the oppressive policies they represented. 551 people were killed by the police, who opened fire on the protests, and the Iranian government hanged many people for speaking out against the country.
