New Delhi: The Railway Board has announced a tenfold increase in compensation amounts for victims of train accidents. This marks the first revision of relief payments since 2012 and 2013.
In cases of fatalities, the relief aid has been substantially raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh. For those suffering grievous injuries, the aid has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh. Even individuals with minor injuries will receive more substantial compensation, now set at Rs 50,000, up from the previous amount of Rs 5,000.
These updated relief measures will not only apply to train passengers but also extend to road users involved in accidents at manned-level crossing gates, where the Railways bear liability.
For instances where a train passenger requires hospitalization for over 30 days due to accidents, an additional payment of Rs 3,000 per day will be provided every 10 days or upon discharge, whichever comes first. This support will be extended for an additional six months of hospitalization, followed by Rs. 750 per day for an additional five months.
No relief payment will be extended to those involved in accidents at unmanned level crossings, trespassers, or individuals affected by overhead equipment (OHE) electrocution.
These updated relief payments are in accordance with the Railway Act of 1989, which clearly outlines the compensation responsibilities in cases of passenger injuries or fatalities related to train accidents.
