Kolkata: Kolkata secures the title of being the country’s safest city for the third consecutive year. It was declared in the National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report. This recognition is determined by evaluating the crime rate in metropolitan areas relative to their population.

The eastern metropolis of Bharat, Kolkata, has reported 86.5 cases per 1 lakh population in the year 2022. Following Kolkata, Pune (280.7) and Hyderabad (299.2) clinched the second and third positions, respectively. The assessment is based on the number of offences registered under both the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) sections.

Comparatively, as per data from the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), 103.4 cases per lakh were recorded in 2021, marking an 86.5% decrease this year. This ranking involves 19 cities across the nation with a population of 2 million or more.
