New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, under the Central government, has unveiled a significant initiative to provide free medical treatment for individuals injured in road accidents. According to the latest announcement, the government aims to ensure complimentary care for a maximum duration of three days, incorporating the crucial first hour following the incident. This initiative is set to be executed within the coming four months.
The move aligns with Section 162(1) of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, which initially mandated free emergency medical assistance within the initial hour after a motor vehicle accident. The financial responsibility for this provision was originally designated to be shared by each state and general insurance service providers.
In a notable revision, insurance companies will now be required to cover the medical expenses for up to 72 hours, inclusive of the critical first hour post-accident. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has outlined its intention to enact this legal provision by March of the upcoming year.
