NEW DELHI: According to data reported by the Union Ministry of Finance on gold seizures made by Customs field formations and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Kerala tops the list as the state with the highest number of registered gold smuggling cases in the country.
Over a span of last four years, Kerala reported 3,173 cases of gold smuggling, primarily involving tax evasion through airports, ports, etc. During these cases, authorities seized 2,291.51 kilograms of gold.
The report positions Tamil Nadu as the second-positioned state with 2,979 cases, followed by Maharashtra, in third place with 2,528 cases, in terms of the highest recorded smuggling cases.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode international airports are identified as major entry points for smugglers in the country. Additionally, the majority of gold smuggling activities are reported to originate from Gulf countries.
