Thiruvananthapuram: The main accused involved in the creation and circulation of a deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna has been apprehended. The arrest took place in Andhra Pradesh, by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations Wing of the Delhi Police.

The deepfake video, which surfaced on social media in November, was developed through an AI technology to create a fabricated and misleading representation of Rashmika Mandanna. Following the actress’s case, similar deepfake videos featuring prominent figures such as Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, and Sachin Tendulkar were also circulated on social media.

The Union Minister of State for IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, responded to the alarming trend by taking strong action against individuals responsible for producing such deepfake content. The issue gained significant attention, prompting directives to social media platforms to take measures to prevent the dissemination of deepfake videos created through the misuse of AI technology.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Delhi Police registered a case invoking sections 465 (forgery) and 469 (pertaining to harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Additionally, charges were filed under sections 66C (addressing identity theft) and 66E ( privacy violations) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
