New Delhi: The late actor and DMDK leader Vijayakanth was posthumously honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan for his remarkable contributions to the field of arts. The announcement was made by the President of Bharat, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, during her address to the nation on the 75th Republic Day celebrations.

Vijayakanth, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016, passed away on December 28, 2023, while undergoing treatment for age-related ailments. His recognition with the Padma Bhushan serves as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy in the realms of both politics and the arts.

Alongside Vijayakanth, other distinguished personalities like M. Fathima Beevi, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court (posthumous), actor Mithun Chakraborty, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, former Union Minister and BJP leader Ram Naik, and singer Usha Uthup are among the 17 individuals honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
