New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised the significant changes introduced by the government in higher education. Over the last decade, there has been a remarkable 28 percent surge in the number of girls pursuing higher education. The point that should be noted is the impressive 43 percent increase in STEM courses, covering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—a figure touted as having the highest statistics globally. Sitharaman underscored that this positive trend will contribute to enhancing women’s participation in the workforce.

Sitharaman pointed out that 1.4 crore youths have received training through the ‘Skill India’ mission, and 54 lakh youths are benefiting from skill training programs. The establishment of 3000 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) further reflects the government’s commitment to fostering skill development. Additionally, seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 16 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), 15 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and 390 universities were established. Nirmala Sitaraman also highlighted that Bharat is becoming an investment-friendly nation. Also, there has been a notable surge in infrastructure development, marking a record increase.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also underscored legislative milestones, such as the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill, making triple talaq against the law, and allocating one-third of seats to women in parliament, which are proof of the county’s approach towards women empowerment.

Furthermore, Sitharaman shared statistics from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, revealing that 70 percent of the beneficiaries are women who have successfully acquired homes through this scheme.
