New Delhi: In a significant move to support households in need, the Prime Minister’s Ujjwala Yojana has announced an extension of LPG subsidy for an additional year. This decision, made during a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, allocates Rs12,000 crore for the forthcoming fiscal year.
Since its launch on May 1, 2016, the Ujjwala Yojana has provided free LPG connections to over 10.27 crore beneficiaries. Aimed at uplifting individuals below the poverty line, the scheme offers a subsidy of ₹300 on each domestic cylinder. A family can avail up to 12 LPG cylinders annually, ensuring sustained access to clean cooking fuel.
Initiated with a focus on women’s empowerment, the project mandates that gas connections be registered in the name of the senior female member of each household. Furthermore, the initial expenses of purchasing the stove and filling the gas cylinder are covered by oil companies, alleviating financial burdens on beneficiaries.
