Thiruvananthapuram: Amidst record-breaking power consumption in the state, consumers face the continuation of a surcharge, now set at Rs 19 paise per unit for the month of April. This surcharge marks an increase from the previous months’ rate of Rs 10 paise, with an additional nine paisa sanctioned by the Regulatory Commission.
The mounting expenditure on power purchase, totaling Rs 28.30 crore in February alone, has necessitated the imposition of this surcharge. Although the actual amount to be charged stands at Rs 25.70 per unit, the board has been restricted to levying only Rs 10 paise. an extra Rs 23.82 crore has been collected since January of the last year with the fixed surcharge rate.
Electricity consumption reached an all-time high on Monday, with 10.48 crore units consumed in a single day, surpassing the previous record 10.46 crore set on March 27. To meet this heightened demand, electricity is being procured from the power exchange, incurring an additional cost of Rs 22 crore.
