Thrissur: The Income Tax Department has frozen the bank account of the CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee. The ‘Bank of India’ account in the name of CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee was frozen following an inspection by the Income Tax Department yesterday. This account was not disclosed in the income tax returns filed by the party.

The CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee had Rs 10 crore in this account, which has now reduced to Rs 5 crore 10 lakh. On numerous occasions, lakhs of rupees were withdrawn from this account. Following the election announcement, Rs 1 crore was withdrawn on a single day.

Out of the total amount in the bank account, Rs 1 crore is a fixed deposit. Rs 1 crore was withdrawn on April 2. The money was withdrawn by the District Secretary of CPI(M). The Income Tax Department who conducted a two-day inspection regarding the account details of the CPI(M) Thrissur District Committee has instructed not to spend this money. The authorities have also directed to clarify the source of this money.

Responding to the issue, Thrissur District Secretary MM Varghese stated that there was nothing to hide in the matter. He mentioned that the party had an account with ‘Bank of India’, and bank transactions were conducted in accordance with the law. He also remarked that the actions of the ED and the Income Tax Department come ahead of the elections.
