Beware of fake SMS: fraud group impersonating KSEB, KSEB issues cautions

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A recent report has exposed the activities of a fraudulent group operating under the guise of KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board). This group employs deceptive tactics to extract money from unsuspecting individuals by manipulating electricity bill services. Their fraudulent scheme revolves around sending SMS messages, claiming that the recipient’s electricity connection will be terminated if the bill remains unpaid. The SMS includes a mobile number, urging individuals who have already made payment to contact it for assistance. Unfortunately, those who fall into this trap become victims of the fraudsters.

The scam takes a sinister turn when the fraudsters send a URL link to the victim’s mobile phone. Clicking on this link can compromise the security of the device, granting the criminals remote access. With this unauthorized access, the fraudsters can then proceed to siphon funds from the victim’s bank account. Several consumers have already reported this issue to KSEB, prompting the board to clarify its stance on the matter.

KSEB has emphasized that they only send SMS messages to registered mobile numbers. Legitimate SMS notifications from KSEB will contain essential details, including a 13-digit consumer number, the outstanding amount, and the name of the respective electrical section. Furthermore, KSEB asserts that they never request a consumer’s bank account number or any other banking details. Consumers are strongly advised against sharing any One-Time Passwords (OTPs) in the name of KSEB.

To address any doubts or concerns, consumers can contact the 24-hour call center at 1912 before making any financial transactions. KSEB has also provided an official WhatsApp contact number (9496001912) for individuals seeking clarification through the messaging platform.

As an additional precautionary measure, KSEB advises consumers to utilize only the official website or other authorized platforms, cautioning against the use of unfamiliar mobile applications that entice users with promises of “cash back offers.”
