Kerala Chief Minister to inaugurate ‘Onachantha’ today : Supplyco cites lack of sufficient stoke

Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to ensure accessible and affordable goods for the masses, the Kerala Government’s Supplyco initiative is set to inaugurate ‘Onachanta’ district markets, despite facing significant supply challenges. The inauguration ceremony for ‘Onachanta’ at the state level is scheduled for today at 4 p.m., to be graced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

With ambitious expectations of achieving a turnover of 250 crore through ‘Onachantas’, the government is keen to establish these markets as crucial sources of daily necessities. The operating hours for these markets are slated from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a novel entry management system in place. Only a limited quota of 75 individuals will be granted access daily, and entry times are managed through the issuance of pre-allocated tokens.

However, the grand opening is shadowed by the unfortunate lack of sufficient stock for several subsidized items. Despite the best efforts, many essentials are still unavailable as the market gears up for its inauguration. Notably, 1,000 kg of grated chillies have arrived through a re-tender. Regrettably, these goods are only available in 14 Onachantas, all of which reportedly have stock in suboptimal condition, posing a challenge for those in need.

Essential commodities such as raw rice, black Jeera, and broad beans, among others, are grappling with shortages, casting a shadow over the successful launch of the ‘Onachanta’ district markets.

Adding to the woes, SupplyCo is currently grappling with stock deficiencies, which will inevitably lead to a delay in the distribution of ‘Onam Kit’ supplies across the state. Anticipated to commence after the 23rd of this month, the distribution process is expected to span a minimum of four days to collect and package the goods from various locations.

As part of a forward-looking initiative, the food department is contemplating an extension of kit distribution up to the 23rd. Comprising 14 essential items, the kits are traditionally aimed at aiding those in need during challenging times. However, due to prevailing financial constraints, this iteration of Onam Kit  will be exclusively available for holders of yellow cards, ensuring support for approximately 5.84 lakh customers.
