Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police has registered a case against Facebook in connection with the hacking of a female psychiatrist’s Facebook page. The complaint was lodged as explicit images persisted on the psychiatrist’s profile even after requests were made to remove them.

This marks the first instance of Kerala Police filing a case against Facebook, and efforts are underway to apprehend the responsible parties. The case follows the incident where the Facebook page of a female psychiatrist was compromised, resulting in the appearance of inappropriate images on her profile. Despite the intervention of Cybercell officials, these images could not be promptly removed due to the hacking.

Subsequently, the police issued a notice to Facebook invoking Section 79 of the IT Act, urging them to identify the hacker and eliminate the offensive content. The notice specified a 36-hour deadline for the removal of the images. Unfortunately, Facebook did not respond or take the necessary actions in this regard. Consequently, the Kerala Police has initiated criminal proceedings against Facebook under the provisions of the IT Act.

In cases of cybercrime, the police can access account details by sending a formal letter to Facebook’s headquarters in the United States with authorization from the Central Home Department. These procedures are established protocols for the cross-border exchange of criminal information.
