Thiruvananthapuram: In response to the escalating electricity crisis in the state, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced a crucial extension of existing power contracts until December 31, 2023, offering a temporary yet effective solution to the pressing issue. This extension guarantees that there will be no load shedding during this period and aims to alleviate the strain on the state’s power supply.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Electricity Regulatory Commission took decisive action by issuing an order late last night to formalise the contract extension. The move is a proactive measure to prevent load shedding and power restrictions, which have loomed ominously over the state due to severe electricity shortages.
KSEB has also confirmed its commitment to securing a stable power supply for the future. As of January 1, 2024, a new power contract will be implemented, providing a more sustainable solution to the ongoing electricity crisis. This forward-thinking initiative seeks to address the current power shortages caused primarily by a decline in rainfall, which has consequently reduced domestic power production.
The Electricity Regulatory Commission has clarified that the existing crisis is not solely attributed to the cancellation of power agreements but is primarily due to the adverse impact of decreased rainfall on local power generation.
In response to the worsening electricity crisis, a high-level meeting was convened under the leadership of Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty. During this meeting, the Regulatory Commission, after careful consideration, directed KSEB to provide detailed information regarding power procurement and supply arrangements. This directive followed a plea from KSEB for the extension of power contracts.
