Malappuram: illegal mining was discovered at the Chenkal Quarry in Melmuri, resulting in the seizure of nine mini-lorries and an earthmoving machine by revenue officials. This unlawful operation came to light during an inspection triggered by a tip-off, revealing unauthorized red brick mining without proper documentation. Revenue officials have taken action against the nine vehicles that violated regulations. Moreover, the Ernad Tehsildar has been directed to visit the Melmuri village office, file a report, and initiate legal proceedings against the landowner.

There have been recent complaints of illegal mining happening during holidays. Police confiscated 18 mini-trucks from the Payyanad stadium premises two weeks ago. Following that, the revenue officials were subsequently removed from their positions. The survey is being negatively impacted due to insufficient staff and vehicle resources in the District Geology Department. The survey is being adversely affected due to the District Geology Department’s inadequate staffing and vehicle facilities. Revenue officials have decided to intensify the inspection in the coming days.
