Malappuram: Dr. Sreejith, a native of Kadampuzha in Malappuram, Kerala, is a notable presence in the Aditya L1 mission, which is India’s first solar mission. Dr. Sreejith, of Padinjatteri Mana, has been at the helm of the team of scientists responsible for the development of the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT), a pivotal component of this solar exploration mission.

Aditya L1 carries a total of seven payloads, with SUIT being one of the most crucial ones. This specialized telescope becomes operational as the spacecraft assumes a halo orbit around the Sun. Its primary mission is to provide continuous monitoring of the chromosphere and photosphere enveloping the Sun. This critical function enables ISRO to investigate the quantity and intensity of ultraviolet radiation emanating from our Sun.

SUIT, a cutting-edge payload, was developed over seven years by the Pune Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. Throughout this period, Dr. Sreejith dedicated his efforts to the mission while simultaneously holding a position at Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Collaborating with scientists at the Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Sreejith emphasized the necessity of establishing a completely dust-free environment before constructing the telescope, leading to the resolution of numerous challenges. He further emphasized that the development of SUIT was executed with absolute precision, ensuring its flawless performance.
