Street vendors in Thrissur lodges complaint against corporation officials for alleged attacks and vandalism on their shops

Thrissur: Street vendors in Thrissur have filed a complaint against corporation officers, alleging that they were subjected to misconduct, demolition of stalls, and damage to their shops without prior notice. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of the LIC office near Thrissur Sakthan Stand.

Normally, in cases of alleged illegality, the corporation is expected to follow due process by issuing the customary notice before taking any action. However, street vendors claim that officials arrived and dismantled their shops without any prior warning. In response to this perceived injustice, the affected traders joined and submitted a formal complaint to the mayor.

There are still many illegal buildings within the corporation’s limits, leading to suspicions that some individuals may have vested interests in the mistreatment of street vendors. The officers in question are accused of ruthlessly destroying the livelihoods of those who depend on these shops for their daily income.

Street vendors explained that they had set up businesses in this location after the mayor had advised them to relocate from the red zone near Shaktan Stand to operate elsewhere. Shopkeepers also expressed their willingness to relocate if they had been informed by the authorities in advance.
