Alappuzha: Karthyayani Amma, the Indian woman who became the country’s oldest literacy learner, passed away at the age of 101 in her hometown of Haripad, Alappuzha.
Karthyayani Amma’s educational triumphs garnered widespread admiration. In 2017, she achieved a milestone by passing the Akshara Laksham exam of the Saksharatha Mission. She was also awarded the prestigious Nari Shakti award from former President Ram Nath Kovind. An inspiration for many, Karthyayani Amma even conversed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her mother tongue, Malayalam.
Despite facing physical challenges, she embarked on the journey to complete the class seven equivalent examination .
In her final days, Karthyayani Amma battled paralysis from the waist down, and though offered palliative care, she chose to spend her last moments at home.
