Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet has given green light to a ordinance that imposes fines for littering in public spaces. The approved ordinance sets penalties ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment up to six months for those found littering on public roads or in water bodies.
For more serious offences, such as disposing of waste in water bodies or throwing toilet waste into them, fines can range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, accompanied by imprisonment for six months to one year. Burying, burning, or dumping waste may result in fines of up to Rs 5,000.
Households and establishments are required to pay fees for waste collection, with a 50% penalty for delayed payments exceeding three months. Rewards will be provided to individuals who provide information about illegal waste disposal, while false information may incur a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
