Wayanad: Thamarassery churam (mountain pass in Thamarassery) has become an all-too-familiar scene of unending traffic congestion. With an increasing number of vehicles and the frequent entanglement of large vehicles on the Churam, travellers find themselves trapped for hours . Holidays bring even more people here, creating long lines of vehicles. The traffic jams often stretch from Adivaram to Vythiri, trapping everyone, including children, women, and even ambulances. The Churam is tricky because there are rocks on one side and cliffs on the other, making it hard for vehicles to move aside or turn around. If the weather gets worse, it becomes even riskier.
The Churam has been grappling with heavy traffic since Saturday evening, primarily due to a sharp rise in tourists visiting Wayanad during the four-day holiday period due to Durga Puja. A goods truck got stuck at the 8th turn yesterday evening, causing the traffic jam to worsen. Thamarassery Police and the Churam Protection Committee have been diligently working to manage the traffic. Breakdowns of vehicles on the Churam and the passage of goods trucks further contribute to these persistent traffic jams. Although overloaded trucks are prohibited from transiting through the Churam, many continue to defy the rules.
