Traffic jam at Thamarassery Churam: CM directs PWD Principal Secretary to take necessary actions

Thiruvananthapuram: In response to the ongoing traffic congestion issue at Thamarassery Churam, the Chief Minister has directed the Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD) to take immediate action. Recognizing the pressing concerns of the Malabar region, a delegation from the Malabar Development Council (MDC) held discussions with key ministers and heads of departments. The topic of discussion during this meeting revolved around the persistent traffic jams at Thamarassery Churam. Subsequently, the Chief Minister’s Office announced that the PWD Principal Secretary has been tasked with addressing and resolving the traffic jam on the Churam road.

Thamarassery Churam has been grappling with severe traffic issues in recent times, primarily due to the rising number of vehicles and the frequent entanglement of large vehicles on the narrow Churam road. Travellers often find themselves stuck in lengthy queues for hours, especially during holidays, when the area witnesses an influx of visitors.

The traffic jams frequently extend from Adivaram to Vythiri, affecting a wide range of people, including women, children, and even ambulances. The challenging terrain of the Churam, with rocky cliffs on one side and sheer drops on the other, makes it difficult for vehicles to move aside or turn around. Breakdowns of vehicles along the Churam route, as well as the passage of goods trucks, further contribute to these persistent traffic disruptions. Despite regulations prohibiting overloaded trucks from using the Churam, many continue to defy these rules.
