HYDERABAD: Prof. Venkateshwarlu Haripuram, the Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Kerala, passed away in Hyderabad this morning. He was 63 years old and had been receiving treatment in Hyderabad.

On August 12, he was discovered unconscious in his official residence. Subsequently, he received Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was swiftly taken to a nearby private hospital in Kanhangad. Later, he was transferred to Aster MIMS in Kannur. Eventually, he was air-lifted to Hyderabad for further treatment. Unfortunately, he did not respond to the treatment and passed away this morning.

Before assuming the role of VC at the Central University of Kerala on August 14, 2020, Prof. Venkateshwarlu had served 30 years at Osmania University before retiring in 2019. The Government of Andhra Pradesh recognized his contributions by honoring him with the Best Teacher Award in 2010.

Prof. Venkateshwarlu is survived by his wife, Sugunadevi Dasyam, and their children, Haripuram Keerthana and Haripuram Gautham Bhargava.

The cremation will take place at GHMC Chandramati Aryan Smasana Vatika Cremation Land in Tarnaka, Hyderabad, at 2 pm on Saturday.

“The statutory officers of the Central University will be attending the funeral,” said Prof. Baiju, VC in-charge.

Prof. Venkateshwarlu Haripuram, often referred to as HV in academic circles, hailed from Vemulaghat village in the former Medak district of Andhra Pradesh (now part of Siddipet district in Telangana).

During his tenure at the Central University of Kerala, he will be remembered for successfully resolving the frequent conflicts between students and the administration that had marred his predecessor’s term, bringing about harmony on the campus.
