Kottayam: The state government’s financial indiscipline has put SupplyCo in a tough spot. They might have to stop everything unless they get Rs. 250 crore right away. Even though the Food Minister told the Finance Department about the problem, they haven’t gotten any help.
The Finance Department, grappling with its own challenges, faced a significant financial burden during the Onam season. An outstanding amount of Rs 1000 crore, including Rs 350 crore owed to various agencies and companies, needs to be settled. The department anticipates covering these dues with funds from the central government. The central government has promised to release the funds after finishing the 2018 audit, but the audit process has only just started.
SupplyCo provides 13 essential items at subsidised rates. Recently, a tender for two of these items was conducted, but companies, participating in the bidding expressed disinterest to engage in further tenders unless prices were increased. This puts the government in a challenging position as it attempts to balance the needs of the people against the financial crisis affecting various sectors.
Despite assurances from the Chief Minister regarding market intervention, significant cooperation appears to be lacking. The economic crisis is bringing difficulties to people in every sector, and the government is affecting the livelihoods of its citizens.
