New Delhi: The emergence of the Covid subvariant JN.1, stemming from BA.2.86, has been identified in certain areas of Kerala, raising concerns regarding its potential impact.

The India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a nationwide network comprising multiple laboratories and agencies tasked with sequencing and monitoring new Covid-19 variants, has conducted surveillance in Kerala, where cases of the JN.1 subvariant have been identified.

Initially detected in the United States in September 2023, JN.1 is now causing worry as it makes its presence felt in India. Rajeev Jayadevan, the co-chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, highlighted the resurgence of cases in India after a seven-month gap. In Kerala, reports indicate an increase in Covid cases, although the severity appears to be consistent with previous instances.

Jayadevan pointed out that the JN.1 variant is known for its ability to spread rapidly and potentially evade immunity. He also highlighted its presence in various countries, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and monitoring of this emerging subvariant.
