Idukki: The water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam surged to 137.50 feet (ft) on Monday, compelling authorities to take immediate action. Officials announced plans to release excess water through the spillway starting tomorrow. The Idukki District Disaster Management Authority, chaired by Collector Sheeba George, conducted a review of the rising water levels. Unexpected and continuous rains in the catchment area contributed to the rising water levels, prompting the decision.
At 11 am on Monday, the dam’s water level stood at 137.50 ft, with a current water flow of 12,000 cusecs. In response to this situation, officials have decided to open the dam’s shutters in different phases, commencing at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The initial release will amount to 1,000 cusecs of water through the spillway. In light of the situation, the district collector has issued an alert for residents residing along the riverbanks, urging them to take necessary precautions. The maximum storage limit of the Mullaperiyar Dam, which has stood for over 125 years, is 142 feet.
