Pathanamthitta: As the Makaravilakku festival approaches on January 15, the Sabarimala Shrine is preparing for the grand celebration, anticipating a significant influx of pilgrims. The shrine witnessed a surge in pilgrims on the last day, with 95,000 visitors and an average of 4,300 pilgrims arriving at Sannidhanam every hour.

The Devaswom Board has said that arrangements for the Makaravilakku Darshan are well underway. The rituals preceding the main event will commence on January 13, with ‘prasada shudha kriya’ scheduled at 5 pm. Usha Pooja and ‘Bimba Shudha Kriya’ will take place on January 14.

On the day of Makaravilakku, the temple will open at 2 am and close after the Makara Sankrama Poojas and regular poojas. Then the sanctum sanctorum will be opened at 5 pm. The acceptance of ‘thiruvabharanam’ (sacred ornaments), ‘deeparadhana’, and Makaravilakku darshan will take place during this time.

Kalamezhuthu, the traditional art form of floor drawings, will commence in the evening. From January 15th to the 18th, a procession of Ayyappa devotees will move from Manimandapam to Pathinettam Padi. Pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit Sannidhanam until the 18th to witness Lord Ayyappan adorned in the sacred ornaments.
