Kannur: It has been reported that the negligence of jail authorities led to the prisoner’s escape from Kannur Central Jail. Harshad, a native of Koyyode in the Kannur district and an accused in a drug case, escaped from the jail yesterday. The Central Jail Superintendent has submitted a report to the Jail DGP regarding the incident.
It is mentioned that assigning jail duties to the prisoner by violating prison rules led the prisoner to escape from jail. According to jail rules, no accused individual should be assigned duties in the Welfare Wing of the jail before completing four months of imprisonment.
As per police records, Harshad was sent to Kannur Central Jail in September 2023 for ten years of imprisonment in connection with a drug case. Several theft cases have also been registered against the accused. However, he was assigned to the Welfare Wing before four months of his stay.
Harshad escaped from the jail yesterday morning while being assigned to collect newspapers for the jail from outside the prison gate.
Followed by suspecting that the accused may have escaped to other states, the investigation has been extended to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
However, there are several allegations that a shortage of staff in the jail is causing operational problems.
