Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has put forth a proposal to the government for the construction of a cricket stadium in Kochi. However, they clarify that no agreement has been signed as of now. Simultaneously, there are hints that the KCA will present another proposal to express their interest in managing the Kariavattom Sports Hub Stadium, with plans to take over for an initial period of 33 years.
Reports suggest that a site for building the new stadium has been discovered near Nedumbassery International Airport in Ernakulam. The location is deemed suitable for hosting international competitions, boasting several star hotels and other necessary facilities. It is anticipated that around 60 acres of land will be acquired from private individuals for this purpose.
However, concerns have been raised about the decision to potentially shift all cricket activities to Ernakulam. The Kariavattom Sports Hub Stadium has reportedly suffered from neglect, with over 700 seats damaged before hosting the last international matches.
The areas near Kariavattom Sports Hub Stadium has also been subject to forestation, and spectators allege that authorities show a lack of interest in implementing necessary reforms. Some voices claim that the intention might be to move international cricket matches from the state capital to Kochi.
